FAMILY
AND SINGLE AIRMAN SUPPORT
There are a variety of support services and organizations
available to both families and single airmen throughout USAFE. Larger
installations usually have the full range of support facilities
listed below. Smaller bases may not have all these facilities, but
the local Family Support Center can tell you how to access them
at the nearest large base. Many of the base services operate from
Family Support Centers. They include:
The Relocation Assistance Program Established to make the
move to your new base as smooth as possible. Transition Assistance
Available for active duty members, civil service employees and
their family members who are separating from the military or civil
service.
Volunteers There are many opportunities for volunteers.
Many are administrative or clerical. Volunteers may be able to be
placed in their area of job interest to enhance their knowledge
and skills in that particular area.
Family Life Skills A practical approach to building and
maintaining healthy relationships. Monthly classes include marriage/relationship
classes, parenting classes and personal skills development (anger
management, assertiveness, self-esteem.)
Personal Financial Management Program A counselor can help
prepare a personalized budget and spending plan. Assistance is also
available in areas such as military pay and allowances, consumer
rip-offs, savings, insurance, car buying, the financial aspects
of home buying and credit card management.
The Air Force Aid Society, the official charity of the Air
Force, helps out in emergencies through interest-free loans or grants
for basic needs such as emergency leave, medical emergencies, car
repairs and respite child care.
Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a mandatory
program for family members (child or adult) with any physical, emotional,
developmental or intellectual disability that requires special treatment,
therapy, education, training or counseling.
Family Advocacy Program This includes the Exceptional Family
Member Program described above; the Family Maltreatment Program;
the First-Time Parents Program; the Parent-Infant Connection (for
parents with children 0-12 months), and the Outreach Program for
prevention of family maltreatment.
The Loan Locker stocks a variety of household items needed
to set up a temporary household. It also runs an Airmans Attic
for the donation of goods to E-5 and below if wanted.
The Family Readiness Program offers a wide array of support
services to military members and their families throughout the entire
deployment process.
The First-Time Parent Support Program offers education before
and after delivery. This program is also available for single parents.
The Life Skills Center offers mental health services such
as psychological evaluations, individual psychotherapy, marital
therapy, group psychotherapy and crisis intervention. It also has
the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment (ADAPT) Program,
which can refer patients to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
Child Development Centers provide weekly care for children
ages six weeks to five years. There are also family day care programs
at the homes of certified providers. Hourly care is available on
a limited basis.
Employment Assistance is for spouses seeking employment
in the local area.
Red Cross services on the base include verification of death
or sudden illness, birth announcements and reports on the health
and welfare of family members due to lack of communication over
a long period of time.
