SatoTravel traces its roots back to 1949 when, at the request of the Department of Defense, the Air Traffic Conference of America (ATC) forged and agreement setting up a single point of contact with commercial airlines to handle emergency mobilizations and normal air travel. In 1953, in conjunction with a number of U.S. airline, Joint Airlines Military Transportation Offices (JAMTO) were established at various military bases. In 1970 JAMTO was renamed Scheduled Airlines Traffic Offices (SATO). In 1986 an incorporated SATO took over operations from ATC and registered the SatoTravel name in 1987. In 1999 a private investment group acquired the company.

SatoTravel has approximately 2,000 full-time employees in 800 staffed offices and automated ticketing locations in Europe, the United States and the Pacific.
