How To Germany

USAG HESSEN / Hanau

U.S. Army Europe has announced that it intends to vacate Hanau, headquarters of USAG Hessen, by next summer as part of its fiscal 2008 transformation and rebasing plan. Fliegerhorst Kaserne in nearby Erlensee and Hutier Kaserne in Hanau were, at press time, scheduled for immediate return to the host nation.

Hanau, a small, bustling city of approximately 100,000 people, was the home of the Grimm Brothers, masters of German folklore. It also was once a center of gold and silver industries. There are a number of rather large military installations in Hanau and, like the city itself, the kasernes are steeped in history.

Pioneer Kaserne got its name from the original German Pioniere (Engineers) who inhabited the post until 1945. It was first built during the 1930s. Yorkhof Kaserne, which houses the USAG Hessen headquarters, was built around the turn of the century. Argonner Kaserne is named after the Argonne Forest in France, a major World War I battlefield. The kaserne still has a large stone platform that was used for a gallows in the last century.

FACILITIES

Schools

There is an elementary school and a combined high and middle school. Local German schools generally only accept U.S. family members when one parent is German.

Medical

The health clinic on New Argonner Kaserne is an outpatient facility providing high quality primary and limited specialty health care. Serious cases are referred to local host nation hospitals or the Landstuhl or Heidelberg Regional Medical Centers. TRICARE-Europe is alive and well in Hanau. Next to the Health Clinic is the Dental Clinic which offers a variety of dental services and care. The Veterinary Clinic offers animal disease prevention and control, issuance of health certificates and vaccinations.

Shopping

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) provides a full range of facilities, including a main exchange, military clothing sales, class six store, shoppettes, beauty and barber shops, pick-up points, laundromats and movie theaters. Other facilities and services include an auto parts store, a gift shop, and car rental. The PX and the commissary are by far the largest and nicest ones around. And they have great hours. The PX is open Monday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Commissary is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

Sport and Recreation

There is basketball, softball, wrestling, tennis and more, and invitational tournaments are organized year round. The Hessen Bowl is one of the largest bowling alleys in Germany, with 32 lanes. The Fitness Center has a well-trained staff, convenient hours of operation, locker rooms and a full array of fitness equipment. The Outdoor Recreation Center organizes great trips and rents all sorts of equipment; camping gear, bikes, ski gear, sleds, coolers and tents.

Family & Single Servicemember Support

Army Community Service is an umbrella organization that covers Family Assistance Centers, the Family Advocacy program, Relocation Assistance, Outreach, Financial Readiness programs and Employment Readiness for family members, and is a resource for all community members. The Single Servicemember Quality of Life program is designed to bring single personnel quality of life in line with their married counterparts.
