How To Germany

USAG Schweinfurt

Though it is slated to eventually close under USAREUR's transformation and rebasing plan, Schweinfurt "may be around for a long time," according to Maj. Gen. Mark Hertling, the former USAREUR operations chief.

Schweinfurt, north of Würzburg along the banks of the Main River, offers an enchanting array of picturesque buildings, parks, outdoor markets, and recreational facilities. Personnel are based at Conn, Ledward, and Leighton Barracks (which is located in Würzburg).

Leighton Barracks, originally a World War II German Air Force base, is named after CPT John A. Leighton, Commanding Officer, Company G, 10th Armored Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division, who was killed in action July 18, 1944. It was formerly the home of the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One), which now has moved to Fort Riley, Kansas, and this is commemorated by a Victory Park on Leighton Barracks. The post has a commissary and Post Exchange, as well as clubs and banking facilities.

Schweinfurt's status as a ball bearing manufacturing center made it an ideal target during the Second World War. It endured no fewer than 17 Allied bombing attacks between October 1944 and April 1945. In 1945, the U.S. Army marched into Schweinfurt, seized the Flugplatz and then turned it over to the American Air Corps. In 1948, Schweinfurt was transferred to the U.S. Army.
